Can a German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix dog be a good guard dog? (BEST ANSWER!)?

This dog I am going to adopt (the mix) is going to be a family pet, but I still want to know if it's German Shepherd instincts will maybe cover the Siberian Husky-friendly instincts. I want him to be a good guard dog and protect us..
By the way, he's still a puppy.

-Both breeds would be a good guard ndog just becaus of size. That dog will intimidate any bad guy! First and foremost, make him a prt of the family in a very loving way, then he'll protect you to the end!

Any dog can be a guard dog. Their instinct is to protect their territory, so YES.

Don`t worry. Let him know that you luv him, and both sides will shine through. He will naturally protect his pack, and territory. Give him some love, and he will grow :)

P.s.: you may want to set up some groung rules, and some good training.

Any dog regardless of breed will protect their owner. Don't try to teach it to be mean though. If you provide the dog with love, shelter, food and medical needs - he will protect you to the end. It's natural for them - it's what dogs do.

I highly doubt it. While he probably will have a higher watch drive (he will keep an eye out and probably make a fuss) i doubt he would do anything "heroic" such as charging an intruder. Very few pet dogs would do that unless they were particularly territorial or aggressive (not very redeeming qualities in a family pet.)

Believe it or not, not every individual dog of a guarding breed is good for the job. Breeders of K9 dogs, personal protection dogs, and guard type dogs will only select a few puppies per litter for training, and even those dogs may not make it to the actual guard training (known as schutzhund.) Any dog even CONSIDERED for this type of training must go through regular obedience training times ten (no joke, the dog must be totally under control of the handler) and must have the right personality.

Since your dog is a mix of Shepherd and Husky, there is even less of a chance of the dog being "guard" material if you were interested in that. And there is no home training for it - once a trainer says "no" you're best bet is to enjoy the well behaved dog as a pet ONLY. The only thing that will come out of home training is an aggressive animal that will need to be put down.

So enjoy your pet. If you live in a bad area, invest in an alarm system and maybe a registered weapon of some sort. Don't rely on your pet to protect you if they don't have the professional training to ensure the dog's obedience, safety, and the safety of the public.

PS - A properly trained dog would not be possessive or protective at all in public, so trying to get the dog to be "aloof" in public (IE not friendly) should also only be attempted through a trainer.

I have a Siberian Husky/German Sheherd mix. She is a fabulous dog, but I would not consider her a guard dog. She looks very intimidating “a lot like a wolf” so people are not very quick to approach her. She will stand between us and anyone she does not know, but fortunately no one has made any aggressive gestures toward us, so I do not know how she would react. If we were to have an intruder she should probably knock them down and lick them to death. She weighs about 70 pounds and is very strong. She is a great family pet and is good with children, just be sure to get jumping up under control early on. Obedience is a must for these dogs, and being a working breed she loves it. You will find that you will form a great relationship with your dog through obedience, we are also looking into agility, just for fun. These dogs do require a lot of exercise, walks and play time. I do not recommend a harness for them as huskies are bred to pull and you will be no match for them on a walk. I use a gentle leader for my dog and she does well. A six foot minimum fence is also a must, my dog is very fast and is a great jumper, when she feels like it. Just a word to the wise, never ever under any circustances allow these dogs off lead outside of the home or fenced yard. Siberians love to roam and will not return on command no matter what the training. If you want a great family dog with a lot of personality, this combination is a great choice. Again, they are not guard dogs but any one with half a brain will think twice before invading their territory.
