What dog breed should I get [revised from last post].?
My dog, Chickoa, is a Siberian Husky x East Siberian Laika.
I'm graduating next year, and soon after I will be moving to Alaska to promote my Cosmetology career [and possibly start up a dog-based career] in a place that I love.
Of course, I will most likely be settling into an apartment at first. There seem to be plenty of places up there for sale that aren't that much money, though.
Anyways.
I'm thinking of a dog that I could get as a companion for Chickoa whilst I'm gone at work.
She *thrives* on play, so the dog would have to be the same size as her — around 40lbs.
Since it's Alaska, it would have to be a dog that can stand cold weather [in the apartment or not, the dogs will be getting at *least* 5 hours of exercise a day].
I'm quite active, so the dog would have to be too. I commonly hike, walk for long distances, and take short jogging trips. Chickoa usually comes with me during these activities; so the new dog would have to too.
Would have to be *Quiet* [the occasional howl/bark wouldn't be bad; but nothing excessive].
Please keep in mind, Alaska is cold. No short-haired dogs, please.
I will be getting into contact with a Laika breeder soon to see how she would feel about two Laikas in an apartment.
I also wish you to remember that the dogs and I will most likely only be in the apartment for a few years; and then we'll be moving to a decent sized house with a few acres.
Thanks.
hurley — it's good to actually hear from someone from alaska!! I figured there might be a lot of huskies/husky crosses; considering Alaska is pretty much dog-sled capital of the USA.
cheers though, i was planning on waiting to look at the pounds up there, and you just confirmed that I need to.
i live in alaska currently and it sounds like you want a puppy, but the pound in anchorage always has husky/mixes. they often have puppys too. i would wait til you get up here because there are tons up here to explore!

A dog that fits your description is the Akita or the Shiba Inu

I like Samoyed's and they fit your description, but almost any dog from the Spitz family would work. Shiba Inu, Akita, Chows, Canadian Eskimo Dogs, Tamaskan. Because exercise isn't an issue for you, whatever dog appeals to you the most, should be the breed you should get. You sound like you can handle any dog you get.

CC, an Akita is not around 40lbs.
I would think a husky would be near perfect aside from the tendency towards howling. Look into a Samoyed, aussie or maybe a springer spaniel.

i agree with the look at husky mixes. you will probably get a younger female, yes? i am just so envious about your move to alaska. i think we may have been cast in a similar mold. i am facinated by wolves and alaska since i was a very young girl. i think you will find great opportunities in canine management in alaska but would encourage you carry on with the cosmetology, as well.
