Siberian huskies in Louisiana?

me and my sister want a dog really really bad, but we can't decide on a dog. she wants some dog that i don't care about, but i want a Siberian husky. preferably a miniature husky, because my mom doesn't want a big dog. i want to know if it is possible to keep one in Louisiana. I've read somewhere that in warmer climates, they should have shade, and a fan in their cage-like area. ive seen ads of them for sale in the classifieds so i know people have them, but my sister said it will be torture. if it would be torture, then give me some convincing arguments.
about the mini husky. its not a different breed. its just a genetic mutation that makes them small. selective breeding keeps the gene. minihuskies.org is where i found them.

1) There's no such thing as a miniature husky.

2) Huskies cannot live outside in Louisiana. Or anywhere south of North Dakota, really. They're susceptible to heatstrokes if they do.

In fact, pretty much no dogs should live outside.

3) You should never buy a puppy from the classified ads. You should go to reputable breeders or rescue organizations ONLY.

4) Huskies are very difficult dogs to train; they are very independent, stubborn, and intelligent. If you just want this dog because it "looks cool," then I suggest you do more research.

Add: I didn't say that no puppy millers intentionally bred runts to make ill-bred small dogs. But there are no miniature huskies. Only horrible puppy millers would try to create anything like that.

I'm not sure if there's such thing as miniature husky. Huskies are really big dogs.

Why don't you try on this quiz and see what breed really matches your requirement, your personality and your lifestyle. good luck!

I think there are reasons you don't see a ton of them in the south. They would have a really tough time getting the exercise they need to be good pets and happy without overheating. Get a shorthaired breed.

i also live in louisiana and love siberian huskies and asked my mom and i had to do research and it said it could die from the heat so i wouldnt unless its an inside dog if its an inside dog it should be fine.

sure u can have a husky in Louisiana. remember the standards that huskies should have, so i might consider some heat-tolerant dogs.

The people across the street from me have one (in CA).
It's not happy here at all. They like the cold weather.
So….my neighbors have just bought another place up near Oregon where the weather is colder and it snows.
Those dogs have heavy coats to keep them warm in freezing temps. I wouldn't have one in LA.

My advise would be to go to http://www.petfinder.com and find a pet for you. There are animals in need on there and animals that are already trained.I have grown up with dogs so i do know what i am talking about. Also make sure you dont go to a petstore. Most puppies from there come from puppy mills. If you want a purebred animal try and contact a breeder. Also ther could be breeds out there that you have never heard about. We breed Greater Swiss Mountain dogs (cousins to bernise mountain dogs) and we have a Tibetian Spainal ( she is a small great dog and she is great. I would recomend this breed for you. They can survive in a colder climate as well because i live in Wisconsin. But they shouldnt be outside dogs) Make sure your sister sees this!

I'm sorry but it is too hot down here for a Husky unless you will be keeping it as an indoor dog. Huskys overheat very easily due to their thick fur. So even thirty minutes in the Southern heat can damage them. Shade won't help very much either. The people who have them probably make them indoor dogs. Would you like to be outside in the heat we have down here in a coat? If so then get a Husky and put on your winter clothes in the summer and stay outside with him. If not then just let it be.
